Most famous for being spirit guides seen in the animated film COCO alebrijes originated in the 1940s, when a gentleman named Pedro Linares Lopez became ill he wandered into a long period of sleep and claimed to see various animals such as a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, a lion with an eagle head, and all of them were shouting one word, “Alebrijes“. Since then these mystical creatures have gained a reputation for “scaring away bad spirits” and protecting the home. There is a certain mysticism involved in the making and owning of alebrijes, with parts of certain animals representing human characteristics.
Like the character of Pepita, from COCO, who is comprised of what seems to be a jaguar, an eagle, and a lizard, alebrijes are fantastical, colorful creatures that feature elements of several animals. They guide their human through the many stages of the next word safely.
Inside Alebrijes Corona you will find paintings and various renditions of these wonderful creations. Everyone is welcomed to a spirited fun-loving atmosphere and seasonal fare that lends to the journey of a positive life full of fun and flavorful experiences.
